Thermowood

Treated without chemicals

Thermowood is produced by heat treating softwood at very high temperatures. This makes it highly resistant to decay and rot without the need to apply chemical preservatives. Resin and moisture are removed

It provides a durable, environmentally friendly cladding that can be left natural or paint fin-ished. Thermowood is a very competitive alternative to cedar, dark brown in colour and weathering to silver grey if left unfinished.

Because we import sawn thermowood from sustainable Finnish sources and machine finish in our mill we can provide a thermowood profile to closely match our customer’s requirements in a variety of different dimensions. Thermowood is a popular choice for architectural features, park lodges, garden offices, summerhouses and saunas.

Patented Heat Treatment

Thermowood (Thermally Modified Timber) meets a European CEN standard. It is produced using a patented thermal modification process. This heat treatment of softwood has a lasting effect on the technical properties of the material. In effect the process creates a new wood species with its own special properties, which are more like those of certain hardwoods and highly durable wood materials.

Environmentally Sound

Energy consumption is low compared to pressure treated timber and no chemicals are used in the treatment process, only steam and energy. Using Finnish grown softwood from sustained forests avoids the environmental issues associated with using tropical hardwood. By milling in the UK we are able to add FSC certification to the product and we use sawmill waste to heat our factory. Timber is known for its insulating properties and Thermowood provides a 100% natural finish, ticking all the environmental boxes.

Durable

Thermowood is suitable for external use without the need for chemical wood treatment. It is naturally durable and resistant to cracking, shrinkage and decay. Because of its durability and deep cedar colour it is not essential to stain or paint. Like all exterior wood products it fades to silver grey and can be oiled or clear coated to help retain its original colour.

Low Maintenance

With a service life of thirty years and with all the resin removed from the timber during the treatment process, maintenance is very low compared to other softwood claddings. There is no bleeding of resin, it is more stable than treated softwood and this limits the potential for shrinkage and cracking.

Cedar and Larch Cladding

The Natural Choices

Western Red Cedar is a highly durable British Columbian grown timber, legally and sustainably harvested from public forests in Western Canada. Naturally durable, it does not require chemical treatment for exterior use, making it very energy efficient and bio-degradable.

Siberian Larch is an extremely durable timber and is ideally suitable for unprotected external cladding. Low in knot content and

very stable, it can be sourced from well managed and sustained FSC forests.

Both Cedar and Larch provide a natural but contemporary design. They are popular architectural choices, particularly for feature cladding on public and commercial buildings, but also now more widely used in lodge cladding and top end garden buildings.

We don’t restrict our cedar and Larch cladding to off the shelf product lines. Instead, we can machine to order and exactly to customer specifications and profiles.
